Apple To Charge $1.99 To Activate 802.11n

Few days back we posted that Apple's going to charge $5 form there current Intel Core Duo Mac users to activate 802.11n on their machines? Apple isn't a devil as we first thought, they just going to charge a nominal fee of only $1.99 you can purchase it right now on Apple's website.

Apple said it is required under generally accepted accounting principles to charge customers for the software upgrade. "The nominal distribution fee for the 802.11n software is required in order for Apple to comply with generally accepted accounting principles for revenue recognition, which generally require that we charge for significant feature enhancements, such as 802.11n, when added to previously purchased products," Fox said in a statement.

But if its a nomial fee, why not charge $0.99? Or $0.01?. Why not just activate it for free can't they just give it for free to their loyal Mac users, who have been running after Apple for so long time.
