Broadcom announces 3-in-1 chip of WiFi, Bluetooth and FM radio

Broadcom, better known as the Silicon vendor has launched a 3-in-1 65nm CMOS chip comprising of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an FM radio, seeking to cut the cost of mobile handsets and hasten converged phone services as these type of phones are in great demand.

Another company, Marvell had announced last year a chip comprising of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth but that was much larger i.e. a 90nm CMOS and was more power consuming than this one.

"Integrating multiple wireless technologies onto a single chip will be welcomed by mobile device manufacturers due to the inherent cost, space and power savings it will enable," said Stuart Carlaw, wireless research director at ABI Research.

Something to be noted here is that multiple radios in one chip may result in sel-interference. Broadcom says it has cracked it with its InConcert algorithms which run it in cycle, with separate antennas or one sharing antenna saving space.

And the FM radio isn't just a basic one – it support both US and European standards for radio data. Hope to see it very soon in phones.
