Tutorial: Overclocking and cooling your Graphic card with just $5!!

Having problem with your non fanned graphic card?? Want to overclock it but temperatures rising??
Don’t worry, i have a an awesome tutorial for you. This is a very easy tutorial as it can be done just with a total cost of $5. Ok so lets start with the tutorial.

Things Required:-
A fan (80mm size) you can get a smaller one as well, just in case you want a LED glowing fan if you have a transparent cabinet then even that will do.
A metal piece
Some cellotape and gum
A screwdriver
ATI software for overclocking(supported by Vista as well), you can download it here

Any graphic card will do for that matter a XFX GeForce 6200TC, which i used to overclock. In some cases graphic cards don’t have built cooling fans, this method will be very useful. This tutorial is basically concerned with fitting a fan which blows air to the heatsink in order to cool the heatsink of the graphic card.

What i have done here is i just got myself a new fan from a vendor which had a molex cable which i got connected to SMPS, in case the fan is smaller then sometimes it may have 3 pins which should be connected to the motherboard.

Then i found a metal piece, which was actually from the front part of the cabinet which has slots to put CD roms and drives, every cabinet will have. Just in case you dont get then you might have to fetch for one.

Now you need to open the cabinet and start with the fixing the fan process.
Make sure that when you get a metal piece, its long enough to come close to the heatsink of the graphic card, but make sure it doesn’t touch it, in case it does and the wires of fan touch the heat sink then it could be dangerous as current might flow in it.

Now just stick the fan perpendicular to the metal piece, you may use cellotape and gum. Make sure it dries up and doesn’t shake or move then you may carry on with rest of the process.

There you can see a part which i have opened in order to flow air in. Thats the way to fit the the setup.

It should be parallel like in the above pic

Now, at the back of the cabinet you can see lots of place for slots, there are wholes in which you can fit the metal piece stuck with fan with the help of a screw.
So the whole setup should look like the fan should be exactly parallel to the heat sink of the graphic card.

Now make sure everything is firm and doesn’t shake. You may now start the pc and carry on with the overclocking process.

Thats the final arrangement, and how it should look like.

Install the ATI tool, you may have to reboot if necessary just in case it doesn’t detect your card. If you are running on Vista then this tool is required as this is the only tool which helps Nvidia cards to be overclocked on Vista. In case of Vista you can use cool bits registry edit which will provide an option for overclocking in the Nvida software itself.
But theres no harm even though you have installed this software as it helps in measuring the temperatures of your graphic card. If you want to see the cooling difference of temperatures then its advisable to install this software before you fix then fan. Run the software and just take a note of the temperatures, then you may carry on with the fixing the fan process. Once you fix then reboot and check you’ll find that the temperatures have reduced by atleast 10*C!! Isn’t that great, its indeed great.

You may create new profiles in the software then create new clocks, increase the memory and core clock slowly then see if the games run stable if not then reduce the clocks, thats an indication that your graphics card has already crossed limits.
You may increase the clocks till you don’t find any problems.
Check the temperatures when idle and while gaming after increasing clocks, make
sure they don’t reach above 60*C while gaming, if it does then reduce a little bit.

Above are the default clocks of my card

I overclocked my card to the extent as shown in the pic. Can be done more though..
I got 25-30Fps in FEAR on Vista with 2XAA most of the settings turned high
Will test more games and let u know the results

CAUTION:
Don’t increase clocks to a huge extent! you may end up roasting your card.
Don’t open the cabinet when theres current flow or pc is on.
I’m in no way responsible just in case you burn your graphics card due to carelessness.

This overclocking process is surely assured to give you a rise of atleast 10-15Fps in games.
Enjoy overclocking guys… have a nice day…. Happy gaming!
