Yahoomail  Yahoo Mail ups the ante in the email storage race. Yahoo announces that it will start providing users with unlimited email storage. The announcement comes at the time when Yahoo Mail does it 10-year anniversary. It was nearly 10 years back when Yahoo! Mail launched with a mere 4MB ( that was whopping at that time)

“I remember getting in a room to plan our RocketMail launch over a decade ago and worrying that our original plan of a 2MB quota wasn’t enough, and that we needed to be radical and DOUBLE the storage to 4MB per account,” said Yahoo! Mail’s John Kremer. “It’s ironic that I routinely send and receive individual mail attachments bigger than that now. Our total capacity for mail accounts back then was 200GB for all of our customers. At Yahoo!, we’re now receiving more inbound mail than that every 10 minutes.”

Yahoo has been constantly changing with time with steady increase to their storage capacities to user. Users with free account were treated with 100MB in 2004 and it was boosted in 2005 to 1GB. Also increasing threat from Gmail and Microsoft has made them constantly do things to keep them competitive.

Yahoo! Mail is at the moment to world’s largest provider of email accounts at around 250 million users worldwide, but Microsoft is cutting the distance with over 228 million Live Mail users and Gmail is far behind at 51 million users.
