Sunita Williams, the Indian American astronaut will be the first to run a Marathon in Space. This attempt involves running the Boston Marathon 210 miles above Earth, staying in Orbit.

She plans to run the 26.2 mile race on a device called ‘treadmill’ on Monday at 7:30pm IST, as the marathon also begins at almost the same time. Williams says running on what is called the Treadmill Vibration Isolation System (TVIS) can sometimes be uncomfortable. The machinery puts a strain on the runner’s hips and shoulders.

She had qualified for this marathon last year, when she returned a time of 3:29:57 hours in the Houston Marathon. Her biggest challenge running in space will be staying harnessed to a specially designed treadmill with bungee cords.

She has a lot of supporters too. The Boston Athletic Association has issued Williams bib 14,000 which has been electronically sent to her via NASA.
