Yup! you saw that right, BSNL & MTNL to offer 2MBps broadband connectivity for free by 2009. This move may land other telecom providers in big trouble. They are going in the same way as in US where you get wireless broadband internet free for residents. The government of India plans to achieve free broadband connectivity at a speed of 2 MB per second across the country, with a similar goal.
And this is achieved by spending only a portion of the corpus of the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), who get 5% of their revenues every year from all the telecom providers. It is estimated that the unutilised sum from the USOF has touched Rs 9,194.12 crore by March, 2007.
Well looking at this i guess other big providers like Airtel, Reliance, Sify and other small providers are in very big trouble. This move may also become reason for some to close their business, unless they provide higher bandwidth speed with good service (this way only corporates can be their clients).
