Yahoo Inc., which needs no introduction, undoubtedly the leader of instant-messaging seems to have a desire to compete each and every step the search engine giant Google takes.
Till sometime ago, Google was known for its special GTalk service, which could be used even without downloading any messenger. Now, Yahoo! also comes up with something similar. This is a newer version of its instant messaging that works from inside the web browser rather than requiring to users to download a separate piece of software.
By doing this, Yahoo!, is trying to target those millions of internet users who don’t access the internet from the comfort of their home, but from cyber cafes.
“Too many people have been restricted from benefiting from this type of communication,” Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo’s senior vice president in charge of communications, said in an interview.
In India, 46 percent of consumer Web users log on from Internet cafes. Yahoo is the biggest IM service in India, according to comScore data, and it dominates in the Philippines and Vietnam, where upward of 80 percent of IM users use Yahoo.
If you remember, Yahoo! had a web-messenger, sometime ago, but was then suddenly removed, it was a Java-based. Again, some clever guys have been using somewhat a messenger on the pc, using the link in.mm.yahoo.com
We all know, that Web-Messenger is not a new concept. As mentioned, Google has been providing it since a long time, then Meebo.com is also popular for providing this service. But the specialty here is that, Yahoo! is the largest instant-messaging service provider, which is now expected to get even more larger with this step involving a lot of competition, especially from GTalk.
