Researchers Develop Lithium ion Battery that wont explode your gadgets

Recently we have seen many incidents where exploding batteries wrecking your latest gadgets!  German scientists over at Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research have came up with an idea to replace inflammable organic electrolytes with a non-flammable polymer, being a solid substance, the electrolyte cannot leak out of the battery.

“We have succeeded in replacing the inflammable organic electrolytes with a non-flammable polymer that retains its shape,” says ISC team leader Dr. Kai-Christian Möller.

Catch is that they are atleast another 3-5 years before these non-explosive batteries make their way into our laptops and cellphones. Also they are still quite a long way in fine-tuning the conductivity of this polymer so that the batteries can store and deliver an adequate amount of power.

Fraunhofer researchers will be presenting this non-explosive batteries at the Hannover Messe trade-show for industrial technology, on April 21 – 25.
