Tutorial to fix your Xbox 360 RROD using Soldering kit!

Have you encountered the dreaded RROD that every Xbox 360 users gets nightmares just thinking about it. If you ever came across a RROD, it typically means that your Xbox 360 is completely done for and needs to go to Microsoft for repairs. Microsoft have officially recognized this as designs flaws and not enough quality assurances tests done on their part so they decided to extend the warranty of the console to 3years. Some of you might even tried the infamous “towel fix” but this time lets do some real stuff that will last.

Still there is a debate on what actually causes the RRoD, but according to the folks at iHacked they believe its is just a soldering issue.

“Generally, the 3rrod error is caused by a solder problem, where points on the GPU/CPU have worked loose – or a temperature problem causing the same result. Following this guide, you should be able to fix these joints, quickly and easily! We have used this process to repair over 10 Xbox360s successfully.”

360 Three Rings of Death FIX -REAL – video powered by Metacafe

Just take a look at the video and i’m sure if you bricked your 360 and screwed your warrenty opening it before the Microsoft tech staffs, I’m sure a new wave of hope will hit your head and that dusty 360 might have a chance. Apparently they tested this method on 10 different 360’s and fixed each of the ten different ones that had gotten the RRoD.

    Ok one thing in this video I see that should not be done! Work on your sensitive electronics on carpet. Carpet causes static electricity and can damage your xbox360. I suggest working on your Xbox360 on a hard wood floor and even purchasing a static strap to wear so you can ground yourself while doing your repair.

    X clamps fix only works for 3 to 5 months, then it starts freezing until u get RROD again, now you have apply more paste, maybe resolder the joints, and tighten the screws under the heatsink.
    If you have any other suggestions please post em

    they never changed the crappy pads on the bottom of the ram. get yourself a RROD fix kit fromwww.modchip.ca. these not only cool the RAM, but provide proper spacing of the MB (exactly 4mm). drill 3/16 holes where the old x-clampscrews went through the MB, & use M5 14mm screws & mount the MB to the chasis, dont just screw heatsinks to MB, because it doesnt fix the uneven board mount problem. Next, you should shim under the MB with 4 – 1mm washers & use 3/16 weather stripping in the “X” indents in the chasis. WHY? because part of the problem is the MB mounts are uneven & causes the MB to flex breaking the solder joints. 3/16 literally a hair from exactly exactly 4mm, so the wetherstrip & washers provide a nice even base for the baord to sit on. u dont need nearl that much artic silve either. i use 6 teeny, tiny dts evenly spaced across CPU, the pressure spreads it out perfectly. last but not least, NO RROD fix will last long unless you replace your fan, it will eventually overheat & happen again. i have successfully repaired over 25 consoles using my method (& an upgraded fan) & every single one is still working. the oldest one was fixed almost 9 months ago & has logged over 800 hours of playing time with no reoccurance of RROD. and oh yeah, JUST LIKE DUBB SAID, NEVER WORK ON YOUR XBOX ON THE CARPET DUE TO STATIC. BERY BAD MOVE!

    @LANCE
    -Lance- After all my research since my RROD I finally liked your fix. It sounds the most effective and has the most common sense involved. I have a question for you. My box didn’t throw any warnings, then just one day it gave 3 blinking red lights immediately after start up. My question is mine does not throw the RROD after it heats up, it is right away when it is cold. So will the fix to the MB and sinks work for mine? Is this a symptom that you have dealt with? I assume that most boxes throw the RROD after heating up, correct me if I am wrong

  6. April 6th, 2009 at 07:16 | #6

    @Josh

    I have exactly the same problem. Directly after starting up, 3 LEDs are flashing red :(

    I made the clamp-fix, but how do I now overheat my Xbox360, since it doesn´t really start at all?

    Thanks a lot.

    u make it over heat by turning it on with the fan disconnected and leave it running for about 15 – 20 mins then 2 red lights show

    April 13th, 2009 at 04:37 | #8

    or try wrapping the x box in a towel and let it over heat, it doesnt fix it forever but it gets it working for a bit

    WTF am I the only one that noticed
    the 360 they showed you wasnt 3Red rings it was 4!
    it was a working 360 that they left the AV cables unplugged from!

    2ndly DONT try this!
    your going to warp your motherboard
    & do more damage to the solder
    that mother board needs to be bolted/screwed/attached
    to the chassis! (steel frame)

    Ya, I tried this exact fix but paid money for it. It sure as hell does work but I’m taking lances advice and installing a XCM air cooler with digital temp display from e bay for 50.00 (USD). I’m also installing an additional core cooling fan from e bay for 20.00 (I might as well as MOD my x box now my warranty is void). Until I get these fans installed next week, I’m only playing my x box for 2 hrs at a time. The bottom line is that this fix DOES work. I thought my x box warranty was up after one year so I did this research and fix. After I did this fix I found out they extended it to 3 yrs. if you still have a warranty, that is the way to go but you can fix your own x box if you are not patient enough to wait.

    June 10th, 2009 at 05:14 | #31

    Does anyone have any Idea on how effective adding internal fans to your x box really are? I’m just adding one on the front side in front of the CPU as an intake. I’m also going to use a 2″ hole saw on top of the case so plenty of air will get in. I figure with an intake fan in the front and the exhaust fans in the back, the air flow will be better. How effective will this be on cooling down my heatsinks/GPU/CPU???

    @wolfegang

    So you have followed llamma’s tutorial and repair kit?
    Well I ordered the repair kit from there to repair my E74 problem and I used the 3rrod tutorial to fix this problem! In other words I did the x-clamp fix, I made bigger holes on the case, I applied everything as instructed. But in the kit there was a thermal paste without the name on it, the paste was white, I applied it on the chips then I started the xbox and it was working perfectly, but unfortunately it lasted 1 day and a half and there it was the E74 again! I have dissassembled the xbox and the thermal paste was melted leaving almost nothing on the surface of the chip!

    So my question is, is this because of the thermal paste or a soldering problem?
