How to Unlock Your 2.2 firmware 2G iPhone?
I’m sure you fellows have already came to know about the iPhone 2.2 firmware and many of us might be wandering if this firmware could be unlocked. Well the answer is yes but only for the iPhone 2G.

The new 2.2 firmware is a must have firmware upgrade because it brings cosmetic and productive changes, like the Safari re-design, new notification icon for EDGE and other unique features such as Google Street View and Podcasts.

Thanks to iPhone Devteam and Pwnage, QuickPwn Tools, we can have these features without locking up our iPhones. The method I’m going to share with you only works for iPhone 2G but later on we will have some jailbreaking for iPhone 3G for 2.2 firmware.

The method is really simple, all you got to do is download the new Pwned iPhone 2.2 firmware and restore it to your iPhone using iTunes. This is now it goes.

  1. Download the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware for iPhone 2G created using Pwnage tool (links below).
  2. Extract the archives and you would get a file named iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw (245MB).
  3. Now connect your iPhone to your PC via USB cable and open iTunes 8 (Cancel if its asks you to update your iPhone).
  4. Make sure you backup all your contacts, music, videos and other stuffs on your iPhone.
  5. Hold shift and click Restore and locate the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware.
  6. Wait till its all done and you should be smiling with your unlocked firmware 2.2 iPhone.

You could also go by creating your own custom firmware with Pwnage or QuickPwn but this method is so much easier and works perfectly with iTunes on Mac or PC.

Download the iPhone 2.2 for 2G using the Rapidshare links below.

Is this for ATT users or is it for everyone else? Or does it even matter for the 2G

(you must have an unlocked 2G with 2.1 on it right?)

I have firmware 1.1.4 unlocked with ZiPhone that has been working well for me. I am worried about upgrading to the new software and getting locked out (because I am then without a cell phone until I can fix it). Is it really this simple? Can anyone confirm?

u gave three links for the download 2.2 custom restore.
Do we use all the of it, or just one?
    which one is it?

  9. December 17th, 2008 at 19:42 | #9

@jojo a – well the update is kinda big. so the update was divide into 3 pieces. you have 2 download them all.

    December 19th, 2008 at 05:08 | #10

but if u download all three, aren’t they all going to be in different files?
so while u restore, which one do u pick?

o, and also, i use t-mobile, but my friend is giving me his iphone and he uses at&t

when i restore, should i have the my t-mobile or his at&t sim card in the phone?

o, do u also have to reactivate your phone after this?

because when i restored it once, i have to reactivate or else i can’t use it

after this restore, i can just put my t-mobile sim card and it works?

or do i have to reactivate, then put my simcard?
    does i work at all?

btw, thank you so much if this works!

    @ jojo a

    ok i got it now,

if u restore, the phone gets locked
if u don’t activate it, you will be stuck on a emergency screen once restored

just put in the t-mobile simcard
    don’t take it out
and follow the instuctions on the video
    i promise it’ll work

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqUtnKvx3JM&feature=email

    @ mazin

the reason u are getting an error 5 is because the ipsw is different

the iphone 2g has two different types

if u go into yours, settings>general>about>version or firmware

u’ll see 2.2 (or ur version like 1.1.4 or something) and like a couple numbers and digits

in this case, the one u download on this website, is 5G77

urs might not be like that

    hope i help!

    @ celeste

1st go to the desktop, right click, create new folder, name it something, anything
    then..

click, the link on the website

    click free user

wait a certain amount of seconds(will show on screen)

    then a download arrow appears
    click that

SAVE the file to the folder u just created

    DON’T UNZIP YET

    download all three
(btw, as a free user, you may need to wait like 15 minutes before u can get another free download)

after all three are downloaded, just unzip anyone, and all three will unzip

u will then see the firmwire with a white lego thingy

    unzip=extract all if u don’t know-sorry if i offend you

    hope i helped!

    @jojo a

ya, sorry i didn’t read ur quesitons before carefully

ya, if u restore with this ipsw, the emergency will be gone, no need of activation,

i suggest putting ur tmobile card into the iphone then restoring

if ur iphone matches the ipsw, it’ll work
