Enable Aero Effect in Windows Vista and Windows 7 Home Basic

One nasty thing about Windows Vista and Windows 7 is , Aero effects not being in the cheaper Home Basic and Starter Editions. But why the hell you would spend extra just for the sake of having some glitter effects. Seriously Microsoft needs to think why not just make a single version that works fine in almost all systems just like Apple does with their OSx. It’s not that hard guys you already did that with Windows XP. But never mind we are not here to comment on business strategies. If you really don’t wanna spend some extra just for the effects here is cool utility.

Creating System Repair Disc

Type system repair into the search box in the Start menu and click on Create a System Repair Disc.

Make sure you have a blank CD in your Drive. A dialog box should appear letting you selecting your drive, now click Create disc. A CD will take upto 142MB of space.

Windows System Tray is a very useful application for most us, rarely do we find it intrusive. But some do find it really irritating and useless. Here’s how a simple registry hack can remove your system tray. I can’t really imagine doing the same to my system.

Open Regedit by using Start Menu search or just Run Box and now navigate to the key below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now if you don’t find the key already all you got to do is create one. Right click on your right pane and create a new 32-bit DWORD value and put the values below:

Recently Google announced a Free DNS service apparently they think is one of the fastest DNS servers on the planet but just because Google says so doesn’t means its that fast indeed. Namebench a 20% Google Project lets you know which DNS would be the fastest from a whole lot of free public DNS services.

First download the application from its official page. After download run namebench, just click on Start Benchmark and it will begin testing out the free public DNS services from Google Public DNS to OpenDNS to UltraDNS. Beware the tests take around 10 to 15 minutes to complete using the default settings. After completion, the results will be presently in convenient charts displaying all the results and performance of the services.

After upgrading to either Windows Vista or 7 you might have seen a strange Windows.Old folder getting created in your C drive and I’m sure many average guys won’t even touch but the fact that its eats up loads of disk space is pretty annoying. Thing is that when you upgrade from your previous Windows,  the installation it makes sure you have have a backup in case you need it thus renaming the old windows folder as Windows.Old.
